The emergence in 1992 of a sphere next to the cube of the Grande Arche and facing the curves of the CNIT is a first in the history of La Défense. Intended to house a hemispherical screen cinema, the building also originally included a museum, a permanent exhibition of automobile production and spaces for entertainment and services.

A word about the architects

The architects Philippe Chaix and Jean-Paul Morel had competed in 1986 for the redevelopment of the CNIT, then in 1989 for the EDF tower. Here they are continuing the research conducted by the American Richard Buckminster Fuller on geodesic domes.

Today, the UGC Ciné Cité is dominated by this atypical shape, whose diameter is 4 meters larger than that of the Parc de la Villette!
