Representative of the artist's vision, this artwork, installed in 1988 in the Michelet district, offers undefined lines, variable according to the points of view and offering no landmarks in space. It explores the concept of contrast between the artwork and its context: its visual strength lies in the examination of geographical and arithmetic representations that transform the atmosphere of this public space. A monumental sculpture 12 metres high, this artwork is part of a series of works whose (un)logic inspired the name Doubles lignes indéterminées [Double Indeterminate Lines].
A word about the artist
Born in 1941 in the Alpes de Haute-Provence, Bernar Venet began painting at a very young age. He made a name for himself by working with tar, which he spread on canvases in the early 1960s. Wishing to redefine the boundaries of art, he is at the forefront of conceptual art, which is why he moved to New York in 1966. His art is increasingly nourished by the world of mathematics and pure science. After a break devoted to writing and teaching, in 1983 he asserted himself in the field of sculpture and created the lines of steel that were to make him world famous. For twenty years, his creations have been displayed in parks, gardens, museums and exhibitions all over the world.
