The Cité de l'Histoire will be hosting a new conference on Tuesday 23 April 2024. On this evening, historian and columnist Virginie Girod will look back at the life of the Roman emperor Nero.

Virginie Girod will be on hand alongside Franck Ferrand, Director of the Cité de l'Histoire, to recount the life of Nero on Tuesday 23 April 2024, starting at 7pm. Nero came to power through his mother's scheming in 54 AD, when he was just 17 years old. The years of his reign were to be tumultuous and many scandals were to erupt. Family conflicts followed one another until he even organised the murder of his mother and wife.

Nero was finally suspected of having organised the great fire of 63, which ravaged Rome. The emperor withdrew from Rome and eventually committed suicide just as he was about to be arrested. His death, at a time when he had no heir, marked the end of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. His reputation, to which the historian will return during this evening, will remain that of a violent, hated and sulphurous emperor.
