"100 years on, Lenin", conference at the Cité de l'Histoire

A conference on the theme of "100 years on, Lenin" will be held at the Cité de l'Histoire on Wednesday 13 March 2024. Historian Stéphane Courtois will be on hand for the evening .

Join us on Wednesday 13 March 2024 for another lecture at the Cité de l'Histoire. To mark the 100th anniversary of Lenin's death, historian Stéphane Courtois will look back at his life and the impact he left on Russia and the Communist movement.

Vladimir Ilyich Lenin gradually became involved in politics, eventually joining the Russian Social Democratic Workers' Party at the end of the 19th century. He wrote many books over the years, particularly during his exile in Siberia and Switzerland. A few years later, he caused a rift between the Bolsheviks and Mensheviks at the party's second congress. After numerous setbacks and further periods of exile, Lenin returned to Russia in 1917, after the February Revolution and the fall of the Tsarist regime.

He became a member of the Politburo (which determined the political line of the Russian Communist Party), Chairman of the Council of People's Commissars of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic and then Chairman of the Council of People's Commissars of the USSR when it was founded. He finally died on 21 January 2024, leaving his mark on communist movements.

A word about the historian

Stéphane Courtois is a French historian and professor at the ICES, the Institut Catholique de Vendée, having previously worked for the University of Nanterre and the CNRS, the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique. Over the years, he has specialised in the history of communist movements and regimes. In the 1980s, he co-created the journal Communisme and has written several books over the years.
